Excessive perspiration

Is perspiration a problem?

Perspiration should be a function and not a burden. Recent research shows that about four percent of the Dutch suffer from excessive perspiration. This may be noticeable on the hands or feet, under the armpits or in the groin.

Excessive perspiration, the medical term is hyperhidrosis, can be a harmless discomfort. But it can also have a major impact on a person’s social life. Those who perspire heavily under the armpits wonder if no one can see or smell the result. Jets of water along the cheeks are completely impossible to hide. And always wiping your hand on your clothes before giving someone a hand gets in the way of social contact quite a bit.

All in all, excessive perspiration can go a long way in embarrassing someone. But it can additionally cause physical problems. Thus, moisture can irritate the skin. Also, the combination of sweat and deodorant can damage clothing.

Sometimes perspiration is caused by an underlying condition such as thyroid disease. In many cases, however, there is no identifiable cause for excessive perspiration.

Botulinum toxin stops excessive sweat production

Injection of Botox superficially into the skin causes the sweat glands to cease production. A simple and comfortable solution. And also very effective; approximately 90% of sweat production is inhibited.

The social consequences of this can be overwhelming. No armpits getting soaking wet and no visible moisture stains on clothing.

Preparation for treatment

It is not necessary to shave the the area to be treated. You can use your usual deodorant.

The treatment itself

Treatment with Botox is very simple. The doctor determines the area where sweat production will be reduced. Every two centimeters, he injects botulinum toxin into the top layer of skin with a very thin needle. Most patients do not experience the treatment as painful. However, when you want, we numb the skin with a cream.

The result of Botox treatment against excessive perspiration

After only a few days, the effect of the treatment will be evident. Where before sweat formed at the slightest, the skin now stays dry and fresh. After two weeks, the botox is sufficiently ingrained. If there are spots that have not responded adequately to the injections you are of course welcome for a check-up and correction. Usually the complaint is gone for a period between six and 12 months. After that, repeat treatment is possible without any problems.
